Brett Ormerod column: Blackpool can take heart from Bolton Wanderers victory

It was important for Blackpool to get that win against Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night for confidence more than anything else.

It’s always an interesting game against Bolton when you take history into account, the 1953 Cup final and things like that. There’s always been that bit of a rivalry between the two clubs.

For Bolton to score late on and then for Blackpool to nick the winner right at the death makes it a fantastic result.

It’s been a sticky spell for Blackpool but they got a decent point away from home at AFC Wimbledon at the weekend which helped stop the rot and gave them something to build on.

Winning in midweek in the manner in which they did, not giving up and going right until the end – especially after conceding so late on– should hopefully give the squad a lot of confidence.

I know David Dunn well, I grew up with him as he’s from the same town as me. He’s a bit younger but I’ve known him all my life.

He’s a great lad, he was a fantastic player and he knows his stuff.

I’m sure he’s got the respect of that Blackpool dressing room because he’s been there and done it.

I know he doesn’t want the job as he wants to stick to coaching but I wish him all the best and I hope he gets the results.

Until they appoint a full-time manager, hopefully he can carry on and keep winning football matches to get the team up that table.

He’s said he wants to play attractive, high tempo football and that’s what the fans want to see.

First and foremost, it’s just important to win some games and get some confidence back in the squad.

It might take time to gel. There’s been a big turnover of players in January and it doesn’t always click straight away, even at the highest level.

That result against Bolton and the manner of it will give the players a shot in the arm and hopefully they can now enjoy a strong end to the season.

There’s been further developments this week with Blackpool’s search for a new boss, with Oxford United turning down an official approach for their manager Karl Robinson.

He’s a renowned manager who did well at MK Dons and he’s got Oxford doing well in League One this season.

They’re an exciting team that play good football. They’re one of the better teams I’ve seen this season as they came to Bloomfield Road early in the season and were superb that day, even though Blackpool won.

He’s a very good manager at this level and has the pedigree, but I’m sure Oxford won’t want to let him go.

If it doesn’t happen, it will be interesting to see where Blackpool go as they’re obviously looking for an ambitious manager.

Simon Sadler and the board will be looking for someone who knows this level inside out but it’s not always straightforward to do that – or cheap for that matter!

It shows the owner’s ambition because he’s aiming for a top name at this level to try and get the club out of this division.

At the moment Blackpool are fairly safe in the league table, so there’s not a huge rush to get a new man in.

If they don’t get their man straight away I’m sure they won’t panic and rush into it.

I’m sure they would rather have it sooner rather than later but at the moment, it’s not like Blackpool are in a relegation battle.

They’ve stopped the rot with a win and a draw, so it’s a case of taking their time to try and get the right man in.

Blackpool return to Bloomfield Road this weekend to play Ipswich Town and that’s a good chance to get back-to-back wins.

They got a good result down at Portman Road earlier in the season and since then the wheels have fallen off at Ipswich a little bit.

They’ve dropped out of the play-offs now down to ninth and that’s after enjoying such a good start to the season. That just shows you how tough this league is.

Ipswich are a big team for this level, a big name, and I’m sure they’ll bring a few up but it’s another good game for the fans at Bloomfield Road.

Hopefully the home advantage can see them through and it’s one I’m sure David Dunn will be thinking his side have got a chance of winning.
