Blackpool's Clark Robertson signs for Rotherham

As previously reported by The Gazette, Robertson, whose contract at Bloomfield Road was due to expire on July 1, made it clear he wanted to test himself in the Championship to give him a better chance of a call up to the Scottish national side.

It is understood the centre back held talks with Sunderland and another Championship outfit, but the Millers are the club who have sealed his signature.

The 24-year-old joined the Seasiders in the summer of 2015 from his hometown club Aberdeen and went on to make almost 100 appearances over three seasons.

He played a leading role in Pool's promotion from League Two during the 2016/17 campaign before helping Gary Bowyer's men finish 12th place in League One last season.

Millers boss Paul Warne said: “I think he's a really good acquisition and I know that other clubs were after him.

“We've had numerous conversations with him and his agent and we're pleased to get it over the line.

“He's at an age where he wants to step up a level and he's got ambitions to try and get into the full national squad and he'll have a chance of doing that playing in the Championship.

“I've always liked him and I met him and his dad, who flew down to meet me, which shows me his commitment.

“He's a really good kid and he really wants to learn. He played a lot of games last year and the couple before that and I think he'll fit in a treat.

"He can step in and play out from the back, which the league we're going into will allow a little bit more and he'll bring us a bit of calmness.

“I've known him for quite a while and he's a left-sider, which is pretty unique. He can play and he was a huge part of the Blackpool team last year. He's a good, strong, competitive centre half which fits in with what we're looking for here.

“I'm trying to sign people who are going to be here for a few years and they're going to improve. I don't think he's the finished article just yet and we'll try and improve him and if the team gets success and he gets personal success from that and moves on then he'll go with our blessing.

“I'm not thinking like that though, we'll try and cherry pick the best players that I like and I'm really pleased that in terms of this transfer, he's the one that I wanted and the one that I got.”

Another out-of-contract Blackpool player could also depart this evening.
