Blackpool midfielder Spearing is seeking goals

Spearing was the only player in Blackpool’s line-up last weekend for the 0-0 draw against MK Dons that has yet to score this season.

The 29-year-old is the club’s designated penalty taker but Blackpool have only been awarded one spot kick all season, which came before Spearing arrived at the club back in October.

“To be fair I’ve always tried to chip in with the odd goal if possible,” he said.

“It is something that is on my mind because I want to bring that side of me into it.

“But knowing my luck, the gaffer put me onto penalties but we’ve not had one since I’ve been here.

“Hopefully I can get one sooner or later and put it in the back of the net.

“As much as I can chip in, I will do, but for me it’s more about the all-round general game.

“If I can assist or stop one going in the other end, I can get a buzz out of that too.

“But obviously scoring a goal is going to give myself a little buzz as well.

“It’s something I’m trying to improve on. But if I don’t score, as long as someone else does and we get the three points, that’s all that matters.”

Spearing is now preparing to make his 28th appearance for the Seasiders as they welcome Doncaster Rovers to Bloomfield Road on Good Friday.

The former Liverpool man has become an integral part of Blackpool’s midfield alongside Jimmy Ryan and he says he is enjoying his time on the Fylde coast.

“I love it to be honest,” he added.

“I knew quite a few of the lads already so it was easy for me to settle in.

“I also knew the gaffer and he’s put confidence in me straight away. Once you’ve got that, you can go out on the field and show it.

“I’m looking forward to the double header over Easter.

“Darren Ferguson has been at Doncaster for a while and I watched them on Sky against Bradford and I was impressed.

“They’re a hard-working team with lots of good players.

“They’re going to come here full of confidence looking for the three points, but we’ve got to keep working hard and keep trying to pick up as many points as we can between now and the end of the season.”
