Blackpool were left furious after a waved away penalty claim led to their second defeat of 2016.

In a tight and scrappy affair at a soaking Bloomfield Road the Seasiders felt they should have been awarded a penalty early into the second half when Jim McAlister’s header appeared to strike the arm of defender Richard Duffy.

As claims were waved away Port Vale raced on the counter only for Ajay Leitch Smith to fire the winner at the second attempt.

His initial header was well saved by Colin Doyle only for the ball to hit the striker and trickle agonisingly over the line.

It was far from a classic in a game Pool managed just three shots on target all afternoon, but it was the ones they missed which were bigger concern.

The chance of the game fell to loan man Andy Little early on as he turned a pass from debutant Danny Philliskirk before firing wide. He really should have scored.

After Port Vale’s goal in the second half Pool offered very little until a final ten minute flurry, where Philliskirk hit the post in stoppage time.

It’s another defeat for Blackpool and one which again leaves them in the League One drop zone.
