Ben Burgess: Potts plants the seed for hope at Blackpool

From an attack that was about as effective as sticking Steven Caulker up front, to an all out show of complete dominance that equaled Real Madrid’s goal total for the weekend.

There’s no denying that Scunthorpe are a poor side (no surprise to see Mark Robins sacked after the game) and they will join a very select few teams that the Seasiders have done the double over in recent years, but the Tangerines have lost against lesser opponents before.

The second goal at Bloomfield Road on Saturday was excellent and involved a great passing move with Jack Redshaw at the heart of it and Brad Potts finishing clinically. Potts has been one of Blackpool’s stand out performers this season and has the sort of energy I could only have dreamed of in my playing days.

When he bursts from midfield there aren’t many players in this division that can stay with him, so if he can start adding goals more regularly to his game then he has a very bright future.

While this result was much needed for Neil McDonald and his players, I don’t think they will be getting carried away and will know that they face a massive game at Walsall on Saturday.

One thing Blackpool have done away from home against the better sides in this division is to completely stifle them and try to hit them on the counter attack, just like at Wigan and Coventry (where they should have won in the end).

A rather strange place that the supporters will be hoping to gain a victory for Blackpool FC is the Council Chamber. As a voice of Blackpool Supporters Trust, Andy Higgins voiced his and thousands of others concerns about the direction that a football club, that once brought so much happiness and joy to the town, is now headed.

The fact that the supporters have exhausted so many avenues for their appeals to be heard that they now have to go down this route speaks volumes.

The slightly worrying aspect is that Mr Higgins had only been given a five-minute slot to try and condense years of disappointment and failure into.

You’d imagine even a brief summary of everyone’s concerns would last an hour!

The team I likened Blackpool to last weekend also had an upturn in fortunes with a less than well deserved victory over Liverpool.

Football is so fickle that a month ago Louis Van Gaal was as good as sacked and was storming out of press conferences. Wayne Rooney was finished and shouldn’t even go to the European Championships with England!

Now, Rooney is ‘back to his best’ and the shy and retiring LVG predicts a tilt at the title. Although from seeing Phil Jones celebrating at Anfield you’d have thought they had just won the title!

As the transfer window edges ever closer to slamming shut, it’s clear that Blackpool have missed out on a number of their top targets.

There have been good signings in Danny Philiskirk and Mark Yates but plenty more are needed.

I understand that McDonald and his scouts have been scouring the Premier U21 leagues looking to unearth a superstar.

This is obviously a cheaper alternative to signing an established player but with the correct scouting procedure there can be some real gems.

With the glut of foreign talent in the Premier League, youngsters need an avenue to prove their worth.

As a player coming towards the latter part of my career, I always enjoyed it when the club would sign an exciting youngster.

Joe Hart’s arrival gave our season a major boost and gave us all an insight into just how brilliant you have to be to play at the top level.

The reverse of this is a player that isn’t fully committed and runs off at the first chance like a certain West Ham loannee did recently.
