He said: “This was really pleasing, coming into the business end of the season and following what was a great win for us at Gillingham.

“To score four goals and keep a clean sheet was great for us.

“It puts our goal difference back in the positive margin, which is important in a league which is so tight.”

It’s a game Fleetwood were expected to win.

But Alexander, who takes nothing for granted, was pleased with the ease of the victory.

He said: “We spoke after Gillingham about the expectancy level and managing that.

“We can’t expect to win a game in the first 20 minutes, it’s about the whole 90.

“An early goal settles everybody down.

“The second and third put it beyond doubt and we just had to be professional after that.

“2-0 can be difficult, if they get up, the crowd start to get edgy.

“But we were superb to put it beyond that.”

Town now have three men tied for top scorer, Proctor, Ball and Josh Morris all with seven.

Alexander knows his players have hardly been prolific in their first League One term.

But he insists they have plenty of quality.

“Their goal tallies might not be up there but you can’t fault their work ethic,” said Alexander. “It’s been evident in every single game.

“They showed it again, defended from the front.

“The interplay between David Ball, Jamie Proctor and Nick Haughton was superb. But when you’ve got that you have to score and fortunately we did that.”

And Alexander praised young scorer Ashley Hunter, saying: “We’ve got a lot of belief in the young players we’re bringing through.

But as a striker you want to score goals. It was a great finish.”
