Aldred: Whole ground knew it was a penalty

Teenager Bright Osayi-Samuel was sent flying after taking the ball past Grimsby goalkeeper Dean Henderson inside the penalty area in the final minutes of the first half.

But referee Darren England waved away the appeals and even booked Osayi-Samuel - who was celebrating his 19th birthday - for dissent.

Speaking at the final whistle, Aldred said he was left "shocked" by the referee's decision not to award a penalty.

He said: “On the whole we had the better chances. We were probably the team who created more in front of goal and we’ve also been unfortunate with the penalty decision.

“On another day we would have got the penalty but their ‘keeper has had a good game.

“I was well in line with it and it’s one of those you could see coming from a mile off.

“The referee’s made a decision not to give it although I think everyone in the stadium was shocked at that decision - but that’s how it is. We’re just unfortunate not to go 1-0 up."

Aldred and his defensive partner Clark Robertson put in an impressive display in the centre of defence to keep one of the league's top scorer Omar Bogle at bay while holding on for their third consecutive clean sheet on the road.

The 23-year-old, who has 16 goals to his name, was kept quiet by Aldred who was less than impressed with his performance.

“I think he’s one of the top scorers in the league and he thinks he’s going to the Championship, but I’m not sure about that based on his attitude today," he added.

“He’s one of those players whose goal record speaks for itself but he didn’t really give us any problems."
