AFC Fylde manager Dave Challinor says that excitement and anticipation are the dominant emotions, rather than nerves, as they face the run-in to the end of the season.

They go into this afternoon’s game against Gainsborough Trinity 11 points clear at the top of the Vanarama National League North table with 10 games left of the season and the prospect of Conference National football at the end of it.

Challinor said: “It is more exciting to be where we are than feeling nervous or anything else like that.

“We want to play as high up as we can and that means high-pressure games.

“We know what it takes to get us over the line and I would rather have any pressure we have at the top than the sort of pressure teams have fighting to stay up.

“Are we home and dry? Far from it. We have had a few bonuses recently with other results; Brackley had a convincing win in the week which keeps them in the play-off race.

“The results at the weekend probably mean we might only need five wins rather than six but we still want to get as many points as possible. We targeted around 87 points and that hasn’t changed.”
