AFC Fylde manager Dave Challinor admitted there were some stern words as they beat Sutton United 2-1.

Having trailed at half-time, the Coasters turned it around in the second half with Jonny Smith and Danny Rowe giving them victory.

“I hate losing and I hate drawing so I was livid at half-time,” Challinor said. “To be fair to the lads they were equally annoyed because they knew they weren’t at it.

“I wear my heart on my sleeve and I tell them the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts but they showed me that they can do it in the second half and they deserved the three points.

“Even if we hadn’t have turned it around then I would have still been pleased with the improvement in performance because we put a good team under real pressure.

“After the break we were the team that looked like we wanted to win the game and it was thoroughly deserved.

“Perhaps the slow start was down to pressure or the magnitude of the game, but hopefully we have some really big games coming up and we need to be able to perform on the big stage.

“If we play the way we know we can – the way we played in the second half – then we are very difficult to play against.

“We got a bit of luck, particularly with the second goal and you wouldn’t want it to fall to anybody else. The games get bigger every week now, none more so than trips to Torquay and Maidstone over the coming days.”
