Cross country season under way for Blackpool Wyre and Fylde juniors

The first meeting of the 2016/17 cross country season was a Mid Lancs League fixture held at a fine and mild Astley Park near Chorley.

The course is a very scenic route, with views of the historic Astley Hall and with tough hilly paths through the park woodland, including a spectacular crossing of the River Chor.

The Under-11 course was over 1.6km around a large field and was made more interesting by a muddy path through a copse of trees.

In the girls’ race, Grace Blincow was 21st with 7:10 and Holly Tickle fourth in 7:53. Alex Maude was eighth with 6:39 in the boys’ race.

Felicity Barnes was in sparkling form in her first race as an under-13, finishing fifth in 10:45 on the 2.5km course.

Lucy Tickle was 14th with 11:04 and Bethany Whipp was 27th with 11:57.

The team finished with 46 points, the same as Blackburn Harriers. However, BWF took full league points because their third counter was ahead of Blackburn’s.

The under-15 girls’ races of 3km included all aspects of the full course and Danielle Whipp led the way for BWFAC with ninth place in 13:28. Hollie Winstanley was 13th in 14:23 and Charlotte Barnes 25th in 15:26. The team was third.

The under-15 boys also raced over the full course, plus a small lap to make a total of 3.9km.

The team of James Smith, 11th in 15:44, Joe Lun,d 14th in 15:54, Jack Tickle, 20th in 16:23, and Ben Armistead, 26th in 17:04, finished fourth.

The next cross country race takes place at the end of the month at a new venue, Cuerden Valley Park.
