It was a disappointing day for anyone who turned up at the Kia Oval hoping to see Kevin Pietersen fire another salvo at the England hierarchy as he made just two as Surrey ended day one of their LV= County Cricket Championship Division Two clash with Lancashire on 145 for four.

It was Pietersen’s first appearance for Surrey since he scored a career-best 355 not out against Leicestershire and was then told he would not be selected for England this summer.

However, he made just two before he was caught by Paul Horton off of Kyle Jarvis, while Kumar Sangakkara (10) also struggled.

Steven Davies (41no) and Jason Roy (21no) saw Surrey to the end of play.
