Fylde coast cricket round-up

The Broadwater club took advantage of Leyland’s first defeat of the season to move nine points clear at the top of division one with a 57-run home win over struggling Penrith.

St Annes were also at home and had the better of their rain-hit draw with Morecambe, whose last pair held on grimly.

Fleetwood chose to bat and their top order all contributed solidly to a 50-over total of 219-8. Opener Adam Parker led the way with 48, all but four of those runs scored in boundaries from five fours and four sixes.

Parker was dismissed by Paul Hindmarch, who took 3-61 from 17 overs and did more than anyone to keep the Cumbrians in the contest.

The other members of Fleetwood’s top four were all out in the 30s, Michael Hay taking 3-53 from 14 overs.

But although no-one cashed in with a really big score for the hosts, they had ample runs in the bag as Penrith were dismissed for 162 from 46.5 overs.

Professional Travis Dean, who is to head home early in July after his Australia A call-up, dismissed three of Penrith’s top four cheaply.

However, Hindmarch led a good fourth-wicket stand with the only half-century of the match, his 53 including four fours and three sixes, as he led a shortlived fightback with wicketkeeper Chris Marrow (40).

But the innings soon faltered as Pat Ashton continued his fine season with the ball with 3-57 from 13.5 overs, Dean finishing with 3-22 off 10.

The afternoon got even better for Mat Clark’s Fleetwood side as Leyland were dismissed for 88 en route to a 45-run home defeat by Barrow, who overtake the former leaders to go second.

Leyland are now third and Blackpool, who were without a game, fourth.

Penrith now find themselves rock-bottom after St Annes climbed three spots courtesy of their winning draw in a game which finally got under way after 4pm following rain and was restricted to 30 overs a side.

Morecambe chose to put their hosts in on a lively track and St Annes reached 128-7 in their 30 overs as De Wet Smart led the way with 28.

In reply, Morecambe looked doomed at 47-8 but final pair Jake Smith and Jamie Cassidy clung on defiantly, scoring 26 between them, as the visitors saw out the 30 overs at 90-9. Number seven Matthew Derham was their top scorer with 24.

Professional Shadley van Schalkwyk got St Annes on the front foot by dismissing three of the top four and finishing with 3-23 from 13 overs, while Tom Higson took a season’s-best 5-45, also from 13.

Blackpool returned to action in the LCB Knockout Cup yesterday,winning their first-round tie by 78 runs at Clitheroe. Blackpool chose to bat first and reached 197-7 in their 45 overs as professional Daryl Mitchell (69) and Matthew Houston (53) put on 124 for the second wicket.

Clitheroe’s reply never recovered from 0-2,though they finally reached 119 from 36.5 overs, with number six Peter Dibb unbeaten on 42 and Jamie Thompson taking 3-16.

Fleetwood won the all-Northern League clash with Morecambe by three wickets at Broadwater.

The visitors chose to bat and a fine opening partnership between Viraj Bhali (60) and captain Josh Dixon (42) enabled them to reach 185-7.

Fleetwood’s openers topped that as Travis Dean (70) and Dean Bell (63) paved the way for Fleetwood’s 186-7 with 10 deliveries to spare.

Lytham celebrated their first Liverpool Competition victory of the season at Colwyn Bay by a comfortable seven-wicket margin.

The hosts chose to bat in North Wales and soon slumped to 51-6 before rallying slightly to 115 all out from 46.3 overs. Anthony Mulligan bowled unchanged to take 4-60 from 23 overs, his best return of the season.

Three other bowlers claimed two victims, including Toby Lester, whose 12 overs went for just 12 runs and included seven maidens. Taylor Cornall also took two wickets despite sending down only nine balls. Number 10 Paul Jenkins was the hosts’ top scorer with 22.

Captain Dom O’Brien then spearheaded Lytham’s victory charge with a half-century as the visitors reached 116-3 in 31.2 overs.

The Australian made 52 from 57 balls, including eight fours, to keep his average in the ECB premier league this season above 50.

O’Brien was dismissed with 18 runs still needed but Gary Knight (26 not out) saw them home.

Lytham remain second-bottom but are only three points behind Formby.
