Busy week for Wesham's runners

January swung into action for Wesham's runners with more cross country and the first local road races of the year.

The Mid Lancs Cross Country League continued at Towneley Park, Burnley, where, in the senior ladies’ 6K, Kath Hoyer finished 68th in 26:18.

Jenn Thompson was 88th overall in 27:55, Kerry Eccles 105th in 28:54 and Anne Berry 125th in 30:42 as the women’s team finished 24th as well as fourth overall in division two.

Dave Waywell was sixth M70 over the same 6K course in 30:16.

The senior men’s 10K saw eight Wesham members running, led by James Mulvany (34th, 36:06).

He led David Taylor (48th, 36:57), Steve Myerscough (97th, 40:28), John Collier (151st, 43:06), Martin Bates (198th, 46:56), Ben Wrigley (209th, 48:26), Dave Marsland (214th, 49:08) and Russell Mabbett (222nd, 51:40).

That saw the men finish as 18th team and leave them third overall in division two.

The Wesham Club Championship continued with the Garstang 10K with the Wesham men emerging as the winning team.

Paul Hetherington (19th, 38:10) was first in for Wesham ahead of Carl Groome (32nd, 39:49) and Andrew Harling (40th, 41:14).

Also running were Helen Lawrenson (67th, 42:39), Gemma Owen (139th, 47:31), Vicky Gore (244th, 53:34).

Neil Gregson was 126th in 46:41, followed by Alan Hudson (163rd, 48:52), Ben Wrigley (184th, 49:50), Phil Leaver (209th, 51:11), Dave Young (220th, 51:44), Rob Danson Snr (257th, 54:00), Paul Carter (258th, 54:09), Pauline Eccleston (266th, 54:52), Kay Twist (269th, 55:06), Sue Rigby (353rd, 61:20) and Jennifer Woodman (413th, 67:42).

The East Lancashire Hospice 10K in Great Harwood saw 534 runners competing in this popular event.

Peter Cruse was the first M55 and 52nd overall in 43:01, while Kath Hoyer was 23rd woman and 145th in 49:22.
