In one of the most exciting bouts ever seen in the history of British boxing, Joshua climbed off the canvas to win by knockout in round 11 amid scenes of pandemonium.
In the process, Joshua retained his IBF crown and added the WBA version.
It was an epic encounter between Joshua and the vastly experienced veteran Klitschko and almost breathless in its intensity and excitement.
Joshua had his rival down for the first time in round five as he caught his man with a right hook
But Klitschko stormed back and it was Joshua's turn to take a count after a vicious right hook in the following round.
After that it continued to be a fight of edge-of-the-seat drama.
The end came in the 11th as Klitschko was down twice before the referee intervened,
It was a remarkable effort from Joshua in front of a post-war record crowd for a fight in this country.
A period of survival was needed by Joshua as he recovered his confidence and ambition in the final rounds.
He clinched in with two further knockdowns of his own and forced referee David Fields to intervene with Klitschko unable to defend himself from another heavy barrage.
Joshua was elated afterwards and stated: "What can I say? 19-0 and three and a half years in the game.
"As I said< I'm not perfect, but I''m trying and if you don't take part, you're going to fail.
"I enjoy fighting. I love fighting,"
The win now opens up the possibility somwhere down the line of a domestic dust-up with Tyson Fury.
