The 31-year-old said he expects the boxing and fitness centre will open later this year above Ma Kelly’s in Talbot Road.

The former British light-middleweight champ said he wants to use the facility to help resort youngsters stay on the straight and narrow – while also attracting both men and women.

He said: “What I’m aiming to do is get kids off the street and help the community.

“When I was nine or 10, I was mischievous and hyperactive but I stuck to a boxing gym and have never been in trouble with the police.

“I have had discipline in my life.

People think boxing is just about getting punched in the face but it also teaches you manners and discipline, which is important for life.”

Work is now underway to convert the ‘massive space’ above popular tourist haunt Ma Kelly’s into a gym that will include a boxing ring and various other pieces of kit.

“It wasn’t being used for anything and it was full of pigeons,” Brian said.

“But we have cleaned it all out.”

Brian said he will lead fitness sessions when it finally opens up in around five months’ time.

“I was going to call it Lion’s Den but that’s a little bit corny so it’s the Brian Rose Boxing and Fitness Centre,” he added.

“It’s not just for boxing, it’s going to be a fitness centre for ladies, men, and children.”
