He assumed the mantle of title holder in spectacular style in the class A category in the 75 kg weight division, beating previously undefeated Littleborough boxer Stuart Shepherd in the first round.

Price had looked the more dominant from the opening bell.

Ferociously punching his way inside, Price stunned his rival with a powerful combination of head and body punches.

At this point the referee intervened to administer a standing eight count.

Shepherd maintained a high guard to protect himself from an expected onslaught.

Price threw a single left hook to the body, sending Shepherd to the canvas. The referee was left with no alternative but to stop the contest after one minute, 36 seconds.

Price now progresses into the next round of the national championships to face Steven Fitzpatrick, of Sefton Amateur Boxing Club, in Liverpool on Sunday.

Kirkham senior Joe Birket is in action on Saturday night on Barrow ABC’s club show.

Coach Steve Davis said: “It’s been a good start to the season for the club.

“John Joe winning the North West title is fantastic for us. Both John-Joe and Joe Birket have been training really hard for their bouts and are in great shape.”

Kirkham’s Kurtis Sullivan and Toby Howarth won at a Great Birchwood show, Howarth by stoppage.
