Gray, who runs a landscape gardening business based in Wesham, is justifiably delighted at officiating at such a high-profile bout that will be watched around the world.

He said: “I am really proud as I think I am right in saying there have only been five British officials who have ever refereed the world heavyweight title and none from Lancashire, so it is nice to be the first.

“On the back of last weekend’s title fight in Cardiff between Terry Flanagan and Orlando Cruz, it is finishing the year on a real high for me.”
