At the age of 25, Cardle is the proud possessor of the Lonsdale Belt after scoring a unanimous points decision over Welshman Craig Evans over 12 gruelling rounds at the 02 Arena in London.

All three judges scored it the same - Fleetwood’s Steve Gray and his colleagues Howard Foster and Dave Parris had it 116-112 to Cardle.

Both boxers showed the scars of battle by the end as they had to dig deep.

Each unbeaten, they were closely matched for long spells, but Cardle’s superior aggression probably held sway.

Cardle was tired but elated at the finish.

He said: “I have been dreaming of this since I was seven-years-old.”
