Blackpool team's agony in national indoor bowls final

The team from Blackpool Newton Hall Bowling Club were on the receiving end of an astonishing comeback by Ipswich in the final of the women's triples at the National Indoor Bowling Championships.

The trio from the Staining club, skipped by England international Janice Gower and also featuring Sue Kearsley and Lesley Waddington, were just one shot from glory at Melton Mowbray after surging into a 14-5 lead in the final.

Christine Rednall, Anna Chalk and Katherine Rednall staged an amazing recovery to win 15-14 after the allocated 16 ends.

Blackpool NH had won another 15-14 thriller earlier in the day against Mansfield club South Forest in the semi-finals.

South Forest hit back from 8-1 down to take the lead, having scored six in the seventh end, but Blackpool steadied the ship for the narrowest of victories.

The Blackpool Newton Hall men’s trio were beaten quarter-finalists on Monday.

The men and women are back in action today in the pairs - a title Gower and Kearsley won two years ago.
