Blackpool and District Youth League match of the week: Poulton Town U16 0 Clifton Rangers U16 2

Clifton Rangers continued to keep the pressure on U16 Beta Gold leaders AFC Blackpool but Poulton gave them a good and competitive match at Boundary Park.

The visitors had to settle for a goal midway through each half as Poulton showed plenty of character to stay in the contest.

Both goals were well constructed team efforts, resulting from accurate through-balls and good movelement.

Andy Drake scored the opener and Luke Daniels added the second.

Manager Peter Leyland was pleased with the way his Clifton side controlled the game, though Poulton did create a few chances of their own and forced Clifton keeper Matty Leyland was forced into one fine save.

It’s been difficult season for Poulton but manager Gary Churchouse has been impressed by his team’s resilience.

He said: “We’ve maybe had more losses than we should but the guys have kept going. If we continue to do that we’ll give more teams a good game and hopefully pick up a few points.”

Clifton manager Churchouse is hoping to continue this form until the end of the season.

He said: “We started well this season but struggled a bit in the middle. Now we’re hoping for a strong finish.”
