Towers fought off a challenge from the experienced Henry Manni, of Finland, in the final 400 metres to secure the biggest win of his career.

And it has set Towers up for the Paralympics in Rio later this year.

A delighted Towers said: ”It is good to know I can mix it with the best and is a very good marker as we go into the last few weeks before Rio.”

Towers’ performance on the final day of competition rounded off a superb week for Great Britain.

They won 56 medals - 23 golds, 17 silvers and 16 bronzes - a new record high for the country.
