It’s a another big week for leading Fylde darts duo Wes Newton and Ronnie Baxter.

But then what’s new?

Darts players travel around so much these days that they make Marco Polo look like a stay-at-home...

Fleetwood ace Newton and Mereside-based Baxter will take part in the Speedy Services United Kingdom Open.

It starts on Thursday and the tournament is described as the FA Cup of darts for it pits together the leading professionals and top amateurs – Sky Sports TV will cover the event

There’s an open draw element for the competition, which takes place in the Premier Suite at De Vere Whites in Bolton. For Baxter and Newton, like the rest of the darts fraternity, there is a lot of travel involved. Last weekend, it was Wigan – next week it’s Bolton.

Later this month it is European Championship qualifiers in Crawley, followed in July by the Championships proper in Muelheim, Germany.

A special date ringed in red for both Baxter and Newton is the World Matchplay at the Winter Gardens, also in July.

Newton is currently number seven in the Professional Darts Corporation rankings – Baxter is banking on earning enough points to figure at the Winter Gardens alongside him. The Fleetwood player was this weekend on his travels again.

This time Newton’s port of call was Wiener Neustadt, venue for the Austrian Open.

He was paired with Paul Barham in round one.

The Austrian event went ahead without Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Simon Whitlock, who withdrew.

Meantime, Baxter, who is looking for sponsors, says such a busy schedule gives any backers plenty of scope to showcase their products and he is keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved.

- Bob Anderson, darts’ very own Limestone Cowboy, hits town this month.

He will be at the Progress Club in Blackpool on June 19, taking to the oche to face challengers, playing 701

It is a charity night, with money raised going to Mediquip For Kids - this will help provide equipment for treatment of children at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

The fun starts at 7.30pm and cost is £7.50, including supper.
