Campaign to revive port rail continues

The port lost its last remaining station in 1970 when it was closed as part of national cutbacks.

Coun Mary Stirzaker launched a campaign earlier this year to try to revive the link.

The Fleetwood Town Council member hoped to get 10,000 signatures for the online campaign, but it has stalled on less than 2,000.

She said: “People have complained to me about the town not having a railway station and being on peninsular.

“But we still need more support, we only have 1,732 signatures.”

Her calls come at a time when trains finally resumed at Blackpool North Station on Monday after a break of five months due to extensive work.

Wyre passengers can catch the trains, currently running at the rate of one an hour, at Poulton station.

Coun Stirzaker (inset) added: “Fleetwood desperately needs a rail link.”
