A Blackpool holiday park which sits alongside an important nature reserve is hoping to expand its site.
Bourne Leisure, which owns the Marton Mere Caravan Park,is seeking planning permission for 55 additional caravan pitches at the site on Mythop Road in Marton, with 20 to be built initially.
Drawings accompanying the application show the caravans would be located across four parcels of land which are currently used as recreation space by people staying at the holiday park.
Some of the land abuts the Marton Mere Nature Reserve which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
A footpath used by the public, which runs through the area of proposed development, would be diverted and landscaped in order to maintain public access to the mere.
A planning statement put forward by the applicant says: “The proposed development would allow for some small scale expansion as well as some internal rearrangements of the park.
“This forms part of a package of development proposals aimed at enhancing both the tourism offer of the park and nature conservation interests.”
A botanical survey has been undertaken and a number of measures are proposed to protect the natural habitat.
Marton Mere Nature Reserve is recognised for its bird population, while the wetlands are home to important species including otters, dragonflies, butterflies and orchids. In 2013 it received a £330,000 Lottery grant.
