A support group for young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people is seeking money to help members attend a summer camp.

The group, Out and About, meets once a week in Blackpool, and offers a chance for
LGBT people aged 17 to 25 to meet and socialise.

It has applied to our Swallowdale £10,000 Community Giveaway for money to send members to a summer camp, which costs £10 each as well as rail fare.

Linda Markey, who helps run the group, said: “Our young people really want to go on this camp, but we just don’t have the funding to be able to send them. Our members are really keen to attend conferences and training to help them learn skills which would benefit other young people like them, and they want to go to schools and help young people with any issues they might have.”

Out and About was formed in October 2012, and has since grown to incorporate a transgender group and a family support group.

Linda said: “Blackpool is a fantastic place for its gay scene, but not if you are
a young person who
doesn’t want to go to pubs and clubs.

“Our members want to meet young people their own age and do their own thing but don’t necessarily want to be out in that scene.

“We are a place where
LGBT young people can come to make friends and get any support they might need.

“A lot of people struggle with coming out and there is still some homophobic
bullying going on in schools. We are just about being able to come and tell people about your week, what’s going on and what you’re thinking.”

The group also acts as a signpost for LGBT young people who have issues which can be better dealt with by other services.

“Whatever their issues, they can come to the group and if we can’t deal with it, we point them in the right
direction,” Linda added.

Out and About is one of several groups which have
entered our Community Giveaway, which closes tomorrow.
