Wyre remains a Tory stronghold

The Tories have a strong hold of the Council, with 36 seats compared to Labour’s 14, with Labour’s leader losing her seat.

Jubilee and Bourne wards have mixed representation this term.

Long-standing Conservative councillor John Hodgkinson will work with Labour’s Robert Fail, who is new to the job.

They have both said they’re confident they’ll work well together despite their political differences.

Coun Hodgkinson said: “I suppose it’ll be a challenge but we’ll be alright.

“I always wanted to do something for my area and I think I’ve achieved that as a councillor and people have voted me in again so they must be satisfied.”

Coun Fail said he was proud to follow in his father, Edwin Fail’s, footsteps, who had been a county councillor in Fleetwood.

There were emotional words from Tory Andrea Kay as she celebrated being re-elected to her Pheasant’s Wood ward.

She said: “I’m just a mum in the community that wants to make a difference for everyday people.

“I’m glad people had faith in me.

“If someone asks me to do something then I’ll do my best.”

Coun Kay said she will focus her efforts this term on the fields off Bourne Way, hoping to protect them for use by families and children.

The result means the authority’s Labour group leader, Penny Martin, has lost her seat.

Husband and wife duo Ian and Ruth Duffy have been re-elected to represent their Fleetwood ward for Wyre Council.

Wyre Council’s Conservative group leader Peter Gibson was re-elected to his post as Breck ward councillor.

He is joined by colleague David Henderson, each winning more than 1,100 votes.

The pair said they felt their strength was in being visible and local in their Poulton ward.

Coun Gibson said: “It’s an excellent result. On the campaign trail we were welcomed and it was very positive so we’re delighted to get such an overwhelming result.”

Coun Henderson added: “We’re visible in the ward, easily contactable, live in the ward and people appreciate we’re committed to the area.”
