Work under way on average speed cameras

In January The Gazette revealed the new safety measures would be used on a stretch of the A588 between Preesall and Pilling – one of eight schemes county-wide.

The Lancashire Road Safety Partnership, which is carrying out the work says there will be minimal traffic disruption but some overnight lane closures will take place with and temporary traffic lights in use.

No date has been set for the cameras, which will use number plate recognition technology and will measure a vehicle’s average speed over a set distance to go live. .

A spokesman said: “The introduction of the system is intended to positively influence driver behaviour and ensure that motorists comply with the set limits on roads, resulting in a safer environment for all road users.”

Cameras have already gone live at the first average speed site near Preston.
