A 21-year-old woman was detained under the Mental Health Act after climbing on top of a multi-storey car park in Blackpool town centre yesterday.

Police cordoned off sections of Corporation Street and Church Street after the woman sat on top of the West Street Car Park at around 4.45pm.

Paramedics were on stand-by as the woman sat above the Santander bank with her feet dangling over the roof's edge.

She was talked down after 90 minutes and taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital for assessment, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said.

Last weekend, a man died after he was seen jumping from the Houndshill Shopping Centre's multi-storey car park.
The man, in his 30s, was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but his injuries proved to be fatal.

During yesterday's incident, those parked in the West Street Car Park were still able to collect their vehicles, but the route up to the top deck was blocked off by parking attendants.

Passers-by stood in the street below, some taking photographs. One council worker said the woman was known to emergency services.
