THE body of a woman was uncovered by workmen on Blackpool Promenade yesterday.
Police were called to the scene opposite TJ Hughes, at around 2.30pm.
Detectives say the woman, who is thought to be in her mid-50s and from Blackpool, could have there since Sunday.
Her death is not being treated as suspicious.
Det Supt Neil Esseen said: “Workmen found the body of a lady lying on the floor around 2.30pm.
“There are no suspicious circumstances, it appears to be a tragic accident.”
The foreman for GallifordTry found the woman next to one of the work cabins on the Promenade, by a pile of rubble.
Paul Rowland, track worker for BAM Nuttall, said: “There were around four policemen there, PCSOs and paramedics.
“We’ve been told she was found down the side of a metal cabin.”
Another workman, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s not a nice thing to find. She was found with her handbag with money and credit cards inside.
“It’s really sad.”
Police say the woman’s body will now have to be formally identified.
The case will then be dealt with by the coroner’s office who will conduct a full inquest into the matter.
