A YOUNG woman has been killed after the car she was passenger in left the road and smashed into a lamp-post.
The 21-year-old victim was travelling with friends in a yellow MG ZR sports hatchback when the collision took place.
The crash happened at 5.46am today as the car was going north along Fleetwood Road, Anchorsholme, towards Cleveleys, close to the Esso garage near the junction with Kelso Avenue.
Police said the 20-year-old driver of the car had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and had been taken to Blackpool’s Bonny Street headquarters where he was being questioned by officers this morning.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “The car was travelling along Fleetwood Road close to the junction with Kelso Avenue where it has collided with a lamp-post and we have one fatal casualty, a woman in her early 20s who was a front seat passenger in the car.”
Police have confirmed the driver and five other passengers who were travelling in the vehicle escaped with minor injuries.
No other vehicle was involved in the collision which sparked congestion as early morning motorists made their way to work.
The scene was cordoned off and road closures were put in place as a police investigation was launched into the cause of the crash.
