Windmill raises sails for summer

The old sails at Staining Windmill, on Mill Lane, were removed in November 2016.Now, after more than a year’s wait, the sails have been replaced – and are expected to remain in top condition for at least 20 years.

Windmill owner Fred Blyth, 59, who lives in the mill with his wife Gail, said: “We made the new sails which have been stuck in my garage for the past however long. We had to wait a year and then it was winter, so we couldn’t put them up then. We were just waiting for a few good days.

“I’m sure the villagers will be happy with it. Nobody wanted them up more than I did, because without the sails it’s not a windmill.

“It’s a welcoming sight and a few local lads helped us with the scaffolding.

“I’ve made the sails slightly shorter and slightly stockier. That’s going to keep them going for longer because it’s not taking the extremeties of the wind. It’s thicker wood and a stronger design.

“It’s a landmark and it’s totally unique. The view that goes with it is spectacular.”

Staining Windmill was built in the late 18th century.

It produced grain until 1923 and lay derelict for years, becoming a Grade II isted building in 1967.

In 1980, it was converted to a house, where Fred and Gail have lived for 15 years.

Staining councillor John Singleton said: “The windmill is a landmark in Staining and the sails have been off for at least 12 months now.

“I think everyone is pleased that they are back because it’s a real sight in Staining.”
