MEP Paul Nuttall has welcomed the announcement that Parliament is to debate a petition calling for an end to spending a fixed amount on foreign aid.

The petition, “Stop spending a fixed 0.7 per cent slice of our national wealth on Foreign Aid”, is to be debated on June 13.

When petitions collect 100,000 names they become eligible for debate and this one has attracted 221,436 signatures.

Mr Nuttall, who represents the North West, said: “I am delighted that so many people took the time and trouble to sign this petition.

“Brits are by their very nature generous and sympathetic to those in need but it is outrageous that Cameron had a minimum 0.7 per cent figure.

“No-one is suggesting not providing foreign aid at all but it should be on a case-by-case basis for really deserving causes.”
