A WEIGHTLIFTER described as a “gentle giant” won the UK bench press championships – then hit his girlfriend in the face.

Jason Sparrow was seen hitting his partner twice by CCTV operators and then had to be Tasered by the police officer who chased him down in the early hours of Sunday morning.

And yesterday the window fitter from Warley Road, North Shore, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend at the town’s magistrates’ court.

The father-of-three, who had worked on riot training with the police, was caught after a woman on Springfield Road asked a police officer to catch a “big guy in a white top” at around 1.30am on Sunday, and prosecutor Paul Foster said Sparrow was “highly abusive” when he was questioned and later had to be tasered after failing to comply with instructions.

The court heard Sparrow had won the Championships before going out at night, where something had been put in his partner’s drink and he believed his had also been spiked.

The former doorman said he was “disgusted with himself and very sorry”.

Patrick Nelligan, defending, said Sparrow’s partner had not made a complaint.

He was bailed to allow a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
