Yellow weather warning for ice extended as Met Office warns 'wintry showers' may hit Lancashire

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for ice with snow predicted to fall in parts of the county.

The yellow weather warning for ice was originally set to end at 10am today (Thursday. January 21), but it has now been extended to 10am tomorrow (Friday, January 22).

It means icy patches may form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to difficult travel conditions and a chance of some injuries from slips and falls

1-2cm of snow may also fall in areas above 200 metres, forecasters have said.

The warning covers all of Lancashire, including Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn, Blackpool, Leyland, Chorley, Accrington, Rossendale, Burnley, Clitheroe, and Colne.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Further showers on Thursday night will leave surfaces wet.

"As ground temperatures fall below freezing, ice is likely to form in places.

"Some of the showers will be wintry, especially on high ground, with 1-2 cm snow possible above 200 metres."

The warning comes after Storm Cristophe battered the county, with five flood warnings and 11 flood alerts issued across Lancashire.
