The Met Office has extended it's yellow alert into Thursday as next week will see the sunshine make way for downpours.

With rain forecast to set in this evening, the weather warning comes into force from midnight tonight (August 9).

In its latest update, the Met Office said the warning, which covers the entire country, will remain in place until the end of Thursday.

It added that there is "significant uncertainty" over exactly where and when the storms will hit - but said they could be "severe".

It warned the change in weather could lead to flooding, power cuts and disruption on the roads in some areas.

A spokesman added: "Some intense thunderstorms may occur, in some instances associated with torrential rain, large hail and frequent lightning, as well as strong gusty winds.

"Rainfall totals of 20-30 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 40-60 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated."
