ARCTIC BLAST: Snow finally set to hit Lancashire

AFTER a host of false starts and weather warnings tonight could be the night Central Lancashire is finally hit by snow.

But while heavy snow is forecast for parts of the country - with as much as 10cm predicted in the worst hit areas - meteorologists are predicting a mixture of snow showers and sleet for much of Lancashire from tonight.

It is believed the cold snap, which could see temperatures drop to as low as minus one, could last into the weekend and even possibly stretch into next week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert, warning residents across Lancashire to be aware as the wintry showers will be blown in on gale-force north westerly winds, which could lead to drifting and temporary blizzard conditions over high ground.

The wintry showers, pushing in from the Irish Sea, will give accumulations, especially over higher ground and clear spells will make way for frost and icy stretches.

And while the weekend will be slightly warmer northerly winds will draw in colder air through Friday to Sunday and sunshine and scattered snow showers will turn frosty by night.
