A Blackpool DJ is inviting pub quiz lovers to ditch their traditional pens and paper and use their smart -phones to answer questions instead.

Entertainer Richard Porter has been running a new interactive quiz at Rigby Road’s Swift Hound pub.

In a bid to eliminate quiz cheats who use their phones to look up answers, particpants are being asked to use an app on their mobile phone as a buzzer and a virtual keypad.

Richard, 33, said: “I have always enjoyed taking part in pub quizzes, but I became fed up of seeing so many people cheating to win.

“I decided that there must be a solution and decided to come up with a way to combat the problem.”

Securing the help of a technology company, Richard’s new design allows participants to use their smart-phone as a virtual keypad and buzzer via a free app which can be downloaded to a mobile phone.

His idea has taken off and he has now brought his concept to pubs all over the North West.

Teams have 10 seconds to answer each question on their phone which range from a ‘catchphrase picture round’ to a quick fire round where punters lose points if they’re wrong and gain points if they’re right as well as a fastest finger first challenge.

Richard, who lives in Preston, believes this new format provides an exciting, new twist to the traditional pub quiz.

He said: “With the old-style pub quiz you don’t have your answer sheet’s marked until the end of the competition and I found that a lot of people were becoming bored half way through.

“As this app provides answers straight away I think it provides a faster paced, and more interactive experience which is proving to be very popular, especially with the younger generation.

“The use of comedy buzzers with humorous lines from popular television shows, also helps to give each team an individual identity and adds to the competitive spirit.

“The quiz has only been running for the past three months but we regularly see 50 to 60 people at each event, it is really taking off.”

The quiz takes place every Tuesday from 8.30pm and there will be a special Christmas quiz taking place at the same time on Christmas Eve at the Swift Hound.
