Police told people on social media to avoid leaving valuables in their cars and to hide Satnavs, music players and shopping bags out of sight.

They also advised residents to make use of extra security they can, including locking garage doors and garden gates “especially if you have a work van that may appear to store expensive equipment”. Drivers are encouraged to park somewhere well-lit and covered by CCTV cameras.

Residents who suspect thieves are operating in their neighbourhoods are asked to contact police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
