The event was part of a larger national project which challenged people to walk 10,000 steps a day for eight days.

Speaking about the Blackpool event, Natasha Carney, senior support worker for Autism Initiatives, said: “On the day we had over 60 people attend but this was just one day of an eight-day fund-raiser, Walk for Autism.

“We started this project to raise awareness about autism in celebration of World Autism Week.

“We support people across the whole autistic spectrum and a little more understanding about autism would make their worlds so much easier.

“The whole project raised nearly £25,000 with over £1,000 of that done by our Blackpool teams.”

One walker, Lorna Docherty, said: ‘My son has severe non verbal autism.

“Even though I have chronic health issues, which means walking 10,000 steps is major for me, this is something I wanted to do to boost autism awareness.”
