Waging war on plastic: Blackpool cafe is latest to sign up to ReFILL pledge to protect our beaches

A conscientious cafe has signed up to the ReFILL campaign, becoming one of the first to agree to help protect our award-winning sands since the start of our campaign yesterday.

The Gazette is waging war on plastic and calling on businesses to display a sticker saying ‘free tap water refills available here’ to stop people buying single-use plastic bottles – which often end up scattered across our coastline.

Compass Cafe in Birley Street, Blackpool, is the latest to sign up.

The cafe’s owner Michelle Burrows said: “There was no hesitation in getting involved. We are already using paper straws and we are up for anything that protects the coastline and the sea.

“We are quite ethically conscious and we have a lot of vegan and vegetarian customers, and I think people will like it.”

Emma Whitlock from LOVEmyBEACH, which is behind the ReFILL scheme, said: “It’s great we’ve got an independent cafe in Blackpool keen to support the scheme and help reduce the amount of bottled water consumed.”
