The result spelt victory for the Fylde Civic Awareness Group, which has been campaigning for six years for a switch back to committees, which last applied at Fylde in 2006.

While 11,934 backed the campaigners, 8,706 voted in favour of keeping the current system, with a turnout of 34.16 per cent, and Fylde are now bound to introduce the change in May next year.
