A rescue horse who was once wild and emaciated was rehabilitated in Blackpool before being sent off to serve in the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, where she enjoyed a long and illustrious career.

Now, at the age of 16, Penny has returned home for today’s special ceremony in honour of her distinguished achievements.

The King’s Troop were in Blackpool yesterday for some well deserved rest and relaxation ahead of today’s festivities.

The horses have had a busy parade season and made the most of the chance to stretch their legs on the beach.

The regiment visits each year to support the rescue centre that successfully turned Penny’s life around but this time staff said it is an extra-special occasion.

Zoe Clifford, centre visitor officer for World Horse Welfare, said: “We are all really proud of her – she has had quite an amazing career.

“She has gone on to prove rehabilitation works.”

After arriving at the charity’s Blackpool rescue centre in a sorry state, Penny went on to serve in the ceremonial unit for 12 years.

The centre’s popular annual open day is today, with Penny’s retirement ceremony one of the highlights of the event.
