A single-storey building containing 3,000 tonnes of baled plastic waste went up in flames at around 6.40pm.Fire engines and crews from Fleetwood, Blackpool, Bispham, Wesham, St Annes and South Shore rushed to the scene after hearing reports of smoke and flames. A high volume water pump from Burnley, an aerial ladder platform from Hyndburn and a command unit from Fulwood were also brought in to help control the blaze.

The location is some distance away from a water source for firefighting and a ‘relay’ had to be set up to pump water from fire engine to fire engine in order to reach the fire.

Bales of waste stacked on land surrounding the warehouse are currently being protected by water jets to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Pictures taken at the scene at around 7.30pm showed huge clouds of smoke billowing into the air.

Fleetwood area police have advised residents to avoid the area and keep their doors and windows closed.

A road closure has been put in place on Fleetwood Road between Eros Roundabout and Bourne Way due to the number of fire engines at the scene.
