A 35-year-old man was taken to hospital with suspected head and leg injuries after his motorbike hit a parked car close to Blackpool Zoo earlier.

The accident happened at around 5.50am in East Park Drive, police said, and saw the road closed in both directions from Blackpool Victoria Hospital to Lawson Road.

Debris was left scattered across both sides of the road after the black Yamaha bike collided with the back of a red BMW 523, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police added.

The man was taken to the nearby hospital, and the injuries to his legs were described as 'serious'.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said an ambulance and rapid response car were sent out following a call at 5.53am, and said a man in his 30s was taken to hospital.

She was unable to give details of his condition.

Blackpool Transport said buses were being diverted away from the road, which was reopen by around 9.30am.

This afternoon, police said they were still trying to trace the BMW's owner and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Steve Hardman, from the Blackpool Road Policing Unit, said: “This was an unfortunate incident during a period of heavy rain and I wish the motorcyclist a full and speedy recovery."
