When you live on the Fylde coast, it can be easy to take the world class tourist attractions here for granted.

Dairy farmer John Lawson, from Poulton, has lived in the shadow of Blackpool Tower his whole life – but his busy job meant he never had time to take a trip to the top.

That all changed when he turned 80 earlier this year and his wife, Jenny, decided it was time for a long-overdue life experience.

On Wednesday he decided what all the fuss was about and made his way to the top of the 518ft landmark.

“It was my wife’s idea,” he explained.

“She said ‘you’re going to do it’.

“I’ve never had change to go up it before because I’m a farmer. I’ve farmed in Hardhorn village all my life.”

But for John, the experience was definitely worth the wait.

“It was a wonderful day,” he said.

“I would do it again, certainly. I think everybody should do it.”

And his trip up the Tower was made all the sweeter by the recent good weather, which meant the couple were treated to a fine view over the Fylde coast.

“You could see for miles and miles,” he said.
