Her husband, Stephen Green, 51, has been charged with murder.

Mr Humphries said: "Carole has three children and now it is up to me to be strong for them.

"She was a very intelligent and attractive girl. She was a looker.

Carole worked at my business for a while. It's awfully sad what happened. No-one deserves to die like that."

Mrs Green worked with her former husband at his Singleton-based financial advisory service.

Mr Humphries, who is 70 and from Chorley, told how his ex-wife had three children – Kelvin and Shellene, from a previous relationship, and Daniel, who is Mr Humphries' son.

All three are in their thirties and live out of the area.

Shellene is a teacher in Sri Lanka and is expected to return home following her mother's tragic death.

Despite separating from Mrs Green in the late 1990s, Mr Humphries has maintained a close bond with her two children from a previous relationship.

Mrs Green's father Arthur, 87, is also still alive.
