THE devastated family of a pensioner killed in a road crash today paid tribute to a “wonderful” wife and mother who helped countless people on the Fylde coast.
Former nurse Averil Monks, who died after being knocked over by a car on Preston New Road in Marton, was described as a “pillar of the community” who was “always willing to help everybody”.
Mrs Monks’ heartbroken husband, George, son Jeffrey and daughter Christina said in a statement: “Averil was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family very much, including her beloved dog Jack.
“She was a regular member of the Townswomen’s Guild and before retirement she had a long and happy working life as a staff nurse and sister for the NHS within the Blackpool and Fylde area, where she helped countless people within the community.
“Averil was the kind of person who was always willing to help everybody.
“She will be sadly missed by her devastated family and friends.”
The great-grandmother, 75, from Marton, was crossing Preston New Road around 4.30pm on Wednesday when she was struck by a black and orange Honda Civic.
Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene of the crash, which happened near to the junction with Winton Avenue.
Tragically Mrs Monks was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers launched an accident investigation following the crash and scrambled a police helicopter to take images of the scene on Wednesday evening.
A 19-year-old woman, from Fleetwood, who was driving the car, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
