Tributes paid to Marjorie Nye a true community stalwart

Marjorie Nye died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital last Wednesday after suffering a heart attack, aged 74.

The former probation officer, from Bispham, was a Gazette community correspondent, trustee of the Grand Theatre Trust and had recently been involved in setting up a new charity, The Fylde Coast Advice and Legal Centre.

Her son Steve said: “Myself and the family are very proud of what our mum did in the community.

“She always fought for the little person.”

The grandmother-of-four was well known for her work with the Labour Party, 38 Degrees Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre NHS Supporters Group, The Fylde Community Arts Project and anti-fracking campaign.

Her partner Roy Lewis said: “A lot of people will remember Marjorie for her letter writing.

“She had an excellent literary style.

“She was involved in various artist groups, she wrote poetry and supported charities.

“She cared about people and was very active. She will be sorely missed.”

Coun David Owen, chairman of The Winter Gardens Trust, said: “She was gentle yet determined.

“She was committed to everything she became involved in and was keen to make a difference.

“Her life was an object lesson in caring for her community. She was concerned for people and because of that people loved her.”

Terry Bennett, Gazette community correspondent, added: “Marjorie spoke for people who couldn’t speak for themselves.

“She was open, honest and frank.”

Mrs Nye, who was married to Tommy before his death, leaves behind son Steve, daughter Lynette and four grandsons.
