Traffic entering the M55 was brought to a standstill when a lorry overturned on a roundabout at the end of the motorway.
The Mercedes HGV had just left the motorway and was negotiating the Ashworth Road roundabout in Mereside when it toppled over and blocked entrances to Yeadon Way and the M55 at 2.30pm yesterday.
The driver was treated for a minor injury, believed to be shock, at the scene and the road was closed for the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening as police waited for a recovery firm to move the vehicle.
Linda Gotham, who works at VW Blackpool on Ashworth Road, said she saw the incident unfold.
She added: “The lorry came up Yeadon Way, out of Blackpool towards the motorway. There was a tremendous crash which caused the building to shake.
“We all ran up the stairs and saw the lorry overturned.
“Most of the people here ran out to see if they could help the driver get out of his cab.
“It toppled over on the passenger side and we could see him waving his hands because he was standing up, so people went out to help.”
It is thought the lorry was carrying paper.
Diversions were put in place following the incident.
Traffic leaving the motorway was sent left down Progress Way while vehicles heading on to the M55 were directed to go the wrong way around the roundabout.
A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: “We were called at 2.30pm to reports of a minor injury at a road traffic collision and we closed the road as a result.
“There were some traffic problems in the area.”
