A woman killed in a horrific crash on the M55 has been named.

Jean Watson, 82, was driving a Hyundai Getz on the eastbound carriageway near Junction 3 at 7.20pm on Thursday when it collided with a Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Zafira.

Ms Watson, from Horwich near Bolton, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries but died a short time later.

An 82-year-old woman passenger in the car suffered a broken arm and other minor injuries.

The male driver of the Ford Focus suffered whiplash and shock related injuries.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “The cause of the collision is unclear at this time and officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed what happened and has not yet spoken to the police to come forward.”

Sgt Mick Young from the Force Road Policing Unit said: “An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the collision and I would appeal to any witnesses to the collision to contact Lancashire Police on 101.”

The road was closed for just over seven hours for an investigation to take place.
